(1969) • Janis Joplin bought a headstone for the grave of her greatest influence, Bessie Smith, at the Mount Lawn Cemetery in Philadelphia. Smith had died in 1937 after tragically being refused admission to a whites-only hospital. (1970) • British-born Australian singer, actress and activist Olivia Newton-John died from cancer at her home in California, aged 73. (2022)
